Hollywood's Biggest Night - The 89th Annual Academy Awards

Each year, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences presents the Academy Awards in Los Angeles, California. The awards are called Oscars. They are the top honors in the American film industry. Tonight we are live blogging about the event!

So, to recap the wild night!

"This is not a joke. 'Moonlight' has won best picture," said the makers of the musical film "La La Land," on stage after accepting the mistakenly announced Academy Award for best picture.

"Moonlight" examines three important times in the life of Chiron, a young black man growing up in Miami. The film won three Academy Awards in total.

"La La Land," the musical about the hopes and dreams of a man and woman in Hollywood, was nominated for 14 Oscars. It took home six, including the awards for actress in a leading role, directing and cinematography.

12:13 AM: Warren Beatty apparently had a mistaken envelope. Has this ever happened in Academy Award history? We do not think so.

12:11 AM: UPDATE!!! The best picture Oscar goes to "Moonlight."

12:08 AM: And the Oscar for best picture goes to "La La Land."

11:50 PM: And the winner is...Casey Affleck for "Manchester by the Sea." It is his first Oscar.

11:32 PM: And the winner is...Kenneth Lonergan for “Manchester by the Sea.” He said the movie he wrote was about taking care of people during great difficulty. Then, he thanked people who had taken care of him throughout his life.

11:30 PM: Actors Matt Damon and Ben Affleck announce the best original screenplay nominees:

11:28 PM: Jimmy Kimmel shows up in a short video making fun of Matt Damon. The two men claim to have a long-standing dispute.

11:20 PM: Jennifer Aniston introduces the "In Memoriam" section of the ceremony. She noted the loss of actor Bill Paxton, who died February 25, from complications following surgery.

A short film honored other industry members lost in the last year including Mary Tyler Moore, Kenny Baker, Patty Duke, Pat Conroy, Nancy Reagan. Raoul Coutard, Debbie Reynolds and Carrie Fisher.

11:17 PM: Scarlett Johannsen announces winner of best original song. And, guess what? The Oscar goes to "City of Stars" from "La La Land." How many Academy Award wins is that for "La La Land" now?

11:15 PM: "La La Land" wins again. Justin Hurwitz takes the Oscar.

11:14 PM: Samuel Jackson presents nominees for best original score.

11:05 PM: Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling announce the final two original song nomination. Both are from the film they star in together: "La La Land." All the original songs nominees are:

10:43 PM: Salma Hayek and David Oyelowo announce awards for best documentary short subject and live action short film.

10:37 PM: And the Oscar goes to John Gilbert for his work on "Hacksaw Ridge."

10:35 PM: Michael J. Fox and Seth Rogen arrive on stage in a DeLorean car, like that used in "Back to the Future" movie series, to announce the award for achievement in film editing.

10:30 PM: The Oscar for best visual effects goes to "The Jungle Book." The film was based on the Rudyard Kipling book of the same name.

10:15 PM: "La La Land" wins its first Oscar: the Academy Award for best production design.

10:11 PM: The winner of best animated feature film goes to "Zootopia."

10:07 PM: The Academy honors "Piper" with an Oscar in the animated short films category. The film centers on the sweet struggles of a young sand piper in learning to deal with a big ocean.

10:06 PM: Here is a trailer of the Oscar winning foreign film "The Salesman."

9:57 PM: The Oscar for best foreign film goes to Iranian filmmaker Asghar Farhadi for his work, "The Salesman." Farhadi boycotted the awards to protest a U.S. ban on travel from his country and six other Muslim majority nations. He thanked the academy through a spokesperson accepting the award on his behalf.

9:44 PM: And the Oscar goes to...Viola Davis! It is her first Academy Award win. She was nominated two times before.

9:30 PM: "Hacksaw Ridge" wins the Oscar for sound mixing.

9:26 PM: The science fiction film, "Arrival" wins its first award of the night, with the Oscar for sound editing.

9:12 PM: And the winner is “OJ: Made in America.” Director Ezra Edelman made the film for ESPN as part of the sports networks "30 for 30" series.

9:11 PM: Best Documentary Feature nominees:

8:50 PM: It is Mahershala Ali's first Oscar win. The actor thanked his wife, who he said was pregnant with their first child through the awards season! They had their first baby, a daughter, four days ago. ​

8:49 PM: And the Oscar goes to Mahershala Ali for his role in “Moonlight.”

8:44 PM: Jimmy Kimmel asks Meryl Streep to stand for a "totally undeserved" round of applause! She is nominated for the 20th time tonight. She is up for best actress for the film "Florence Foster Jenkins." President Donald Trump recently called Streep "overrated."

8:40 PM: Kimmel notes that Amazon is in Oscars competition with its production credit in "Manchester By The Sea." He tells Amazon owner Jeff Bezos that, if "Manchester" wins, he can expect his Oscar in two to five business days. That's what Amazon tells customers who buy things from the online marketplace!

8:37 PM: Kimmel jokes in introduction that millions of people are watching this around the world in countries "that now hate us."

8:30 PM: Justin Timberlake ​opens the show with the song, "Can't Stop the Feeling!" Late night talk show host, Jimmy Kimmel, is hosting the Oscars for the first time.

8:12 PM: Denzel Washington and wife Pauletta arrive. Denzel Washington is nominated for best actor for his performance in the movie "Fences." The movie is also nominated for best picture.

8:04 PM: Nicole Kidman and her husband, country music star, Keith Urban, on the red carpet. Kidman is nominated for best actress in a supporting role for her performance in the film "Lion."

7:56 PM: Casey Affleck on the Red Carpet!​ Sporting a beard not seen in "Manchester by the Sea" the movie for which he has been nominated a best actor Oscar!

7:52 PM: Many are wondering if the ceremony will “get political” this year, as in years past. Will Oscar winners use their speeches to give support to political groups or positions? Hollywood is generally considered politically liberal. Will that be in evidence tonight?
